AYUDH Houston 2017

The first project of 2018 was a donation drive for Star of Hope!

Over the past couple of months, AYUDH Houston has been helping out the community after Hurricane Harvey by feeding and giving to those who cannot afford even the basic living necessities of life.

Soon after Harvey’s landfall in September, the youth and community came together and started planning the first of our Harvey projects. We started our project by devoting our time and manpower to assist those who lost their homes by helping remove water damaged parts of those houses that were flooded. Following this project, three families who lost their homes and a large portion of their possessions were assigned to us through ADOPT-A-FAMILY. With monetary assistance from families across Texas, the families were given items like home goods, kitchen supplies, clothes and silverware. As our third project, we were able to provide different organizations supplies to provide for their respective groups of people affected by Harvey. Items such as reading glasses, socks, and vitamin drinks were provided in bundles of hundreds donated by families and friends in Dallas.

Alongside these projects, we continued to make and deliver meals to the homeless every month. A Thanksgiving Sandwich making session was held to create over 100 sandwiches, trays of pasta and granola bars.

For our last set of projects of the year to commemorate the holiday spirit, members of AYUDH Houston signed up for multiple shifts through the organization of Toys for Tots. A week later another monthly sandwich making was held. Another 100 sandwiches were prepared along with pasta and cookies, and due to the cold weather the AYUDH members were able to give out 100 pairs of socks to all who came. The last project of 2017 and the first project of 2018 was a donation drive for Star of Hope, a homeless shelter. Families in Houston got together and contributed multiple bags of clothes, shoes, socks, hygiene products, diapers, wash clothes, vitamin mix, and reading glasses.
