AYUDH America Retreat Kick Starts Initiatives Across America
The AYUDH America Youth Retreat was wildly successful and went off with flying colors. Held at the M.A. Center, Chicago on August 15-17, 2014, more than 100 youth came from all parts of the United States, Canada and Costa Rica. Though the various local AYUDH chapters are active year-round, this is the first time all of them came together, under a single umbrella of AYUDH America to share, collaborate and kick start new initiatives. In addition to the wonderful Ayudh members who helped organize and facilitate the retreat, Swami Ramakrishnananda Puri, Br. Shantamrita Chaitanya and Br. Ramanand led the youth in discussions, Q&As, meditation, music sessions and several talks based on the themes of the retreat.
Themed “Awareness in Action,” the retreat, comprised of activities pertaining to various aspects of this theme such as integrated living, ecological sustainability, team dynamics and conscious consumption. Through discussions and games the youth learned how to apply these principles in their daily lives, and even better to encourage each other as a community to enact positive change. Learning what different AYUDH chapters are already doing inspired enthusiastic planning of future projects. Some of the projects that the youth pledged to do in the next year included green initiatives like tree plantings, recycling and litter removal drives; social outreach initiatives like serving in soup kitchens and visiting elderly homes; service initiatives like becoming CPR and First Aid trained; and personal development initiatives involving book/scriptural readings and value based discussions.
In addition to the many inspiring discussions and talks there were also many games that led to everyone becoming more closely bonded. Everyone got together to perform a dance that was like a giant flash mob based on Amma’s dance. In the evening there was bonfire around which many a hilarious story was told, as everyone made smores and watched the meteor shower that was occurring the same night. The retreat ended with creative expression through graffiti art and the joyous throwing of Holi colors.
One unforgettable highlight of the retreat was a Skype session with Amma as she was giving Darshan in Amritapuri. As usual, through her loving words, Amma brought life and love into the event. The smiles and joyous callouts reflected the brimming enthusiasm in all those present. Is there a better way to kick start AYUDH America into a new year of growth and service?
