International Women's Day

Ammachi Labs is a multidisciplinary research center of Amrita University with a focus in technological innovation for social impact in the field of computer-human interaction, haptics, multimedia and virtual reality, with application areas in education, health care, defense and disaster preparedness. Ammachi Labs extends Amrita University’s unswerving focus on providing effective value-based education to include skill development at all levels and in all disciplines.

‪On International Womens Day‬, AMMACHI Labs presents  a glimpse of their work to empower India's rural women to improve sanitation and public health throughout the country.

Women and girls are disproportionately affected by the lack of toilets in households, often walking long distances to remote areas to relieve themselves before dawn or after dark. This puts them at an increased risk of violence.

That's why our own AMMACHI Labs is ramping up efforts to train women to build toilets for themselves and their communities in 21 states across India. In this way, the whole community learns that sanitation matters, the women earn income building and maintaining toilets, and everybody is safer and healthier.
