Socks for the Homeless

Homelessness has been rising dramatically in the United States. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, people entering a homeless shelter for the first time was up 23% in 2023. Further, almost 40% of people experiencing homelessness were unsheltered. More than ever, as Amma devotees, we need to help our brothers and sisters who are suffering. Providing socks for people who are experiencing homelessness may seem like a drop in the bucket. But, for those who are on the streets, foot health is a significant issue. Clean, thick white socks can truly help. The Socks for the Homeless Project was started by MAC New England in 2016. After a banner year in 2022/23 (1,182 pairs of socks), we had an off year for the winter of 2024 (284 pairs).

All of us can help! With the monetary donations collected, Pranata will be purchasing socks and dropping them off at Amos House Shelter in Providence Rhode Island. Amos House serves men, women, and children providing comprehensive case management services, food, and shelter.

How to Donate

  • Cash and checks will be collected at satsangs and MAC New England event.
  • Please do not bring socks to satsang gatherings as we have no means for storing them.
  • Donations by check are made out to “MA Center New England” noting “socks for homeless” on the memo line. Checks can be mailed to:

Attention: socks for the homeless

Amma has said, “Go out and serve the suffering. Learn to place others in front of yourself.” Recognizing the suffering of the homeless and donating socks becomes a devotional practice that is enlivened by Amma’s Grace.
