Amma Canada December Food Rescue

Volunteers at Feed Scarborough unloading food donations 'rescued' by Amma Canada volunteers

Amma Canada December Food Rescue

Over the holidays and on each Saturday in December, dedicated Amma Canada volunteers collected over 1200 lbs of useable food from Georgetown Bread Basket and delivered it to the Brampton’s Knight Table. Donations included frozen sausages and vegetables, fresh celery, pastries, and boxes of assorted non-perishables. Knights Table expressed their gratitude for the donations.

Food Rescue Summary for 2023

In 2023, thanks to Amma Canada's partnership with Georgetown Bread Basket, a small group of Amma Canada volunteer drivers collected and redistributed just over 9,700 lbs of useable food to Brampton’s Knight Table, Feed Scarborough, and more than 10 other food programs and food banks in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)! In addition, many boxes of apples from the Amma Canada orchard were included with the donations. Thank you to all volunteers who collected and delivered food donations! Our small contributions made a difference.

The statistics on food bank usage have reached crisis proportions, with a staggering with 1 in 10 families in the GTA relying on food banks. This a 51% increase from last year, with close to 3 million visits to food banks in 2023. A volunteer at Feed Scarborough, one of the food banks Amma Canada drops off donations to, recently revealed their weekly family numbers have swelled from 150 to 700! They are very grateful for all food donations they receive.
