Farming Update - Sep 14

Amma Canada flower garden

Help pick apples in the orchard!

Many heartfelt thanks to all the sevites who showed up Saturday to harvest in the veggie garden and orchard! A big thank you to our cook/waitress who prepared and served a wonderful lunch for the sevites and our guests from Sundance Commons. (Sundance Commons is a charity that trains youth who are interested in farming and helps them access land, tools, and training to start their own farm operations. They also operate a market place through which Amma Canada is selling some of our produce.) In addition to these guests, the Farm Team welcomed a family of longtime Amma family devotees who came to do seva.

In spite of the autumn chill in the morning air, last Saturday turned out to be a perfect day for harvesting. Not too hot and not too cold! We were able to harvest over 1000 lbs of apples of which 536 lbs will be delivered by volunteers to food banks throughout the GTA. This brings out total donations of fruit to 973 lbs so far this year. Another 105 lbs of damaged apples and pears have been given to a local farmer for animal feed. One very keen sevite has sold $358 worth of our summer pears through her contacts, and has obtained another $300 in pre-orders of Bosc pears. Wow! Within the next two weeks, many more of our apples will ripen. We will need many helping hands to harvest the apples, and deliver them to food banks or sell them to friends and family. Amma has given us an amazing crop of apples this year. It is now up to us to make sure they do not go to waste!

Farm seva starts at this Saturday, September 14 between 10 AM in the veggie garden and 11 AM in the orchard, and runs until 4 PM. We will also be selling our produce from 1-4 PM. Please check the farming chat for updates. A light lunch will be provided. If you will be joining for lunch or if you have any questions, please  email ammatoronto@ammagroups.org.
