October 21: Farming Update

900 lbs of apples picked by Toronto Amrita Bala Kendra

On Sunday, October 15, the Farm hosted the Toronto Amrita Bala Kendra (ABK) group for their annual apple picking. In spite of the colder weather, the youth along with their parents, enjoyed a day of harvesting apples. ABK was kind enough to send us their A-Team of apple pickers. Over a period of about 2 hours, over 900 pounds of apples were harvested! A big thanks to all who came out to assist with the harvest.

Since the last update, 2,300 lbs of pears and apples have been donated to food banks. Most of this amount was picked by Food for Life for distribution at food banks throughout Halton. Other food banks in Ancaster, Etobicoke and Thornhill also received some of the apples and pears. The total donation of Farm orchard fruit to food banks throughout the GTA this season now stands at 8,223 lbs. Many thanks to all who have made this possible!

Farming seva this weekend is cancelled as we will be hosting the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangha (HSS) for apple picking. HSS has been assisting with the apple harvest for many years. We are looking forward to hosting this high energy group this Saturday!
