AYUDH LA!
AYUDH is the youth sector of Embracing the World focused on empowering youth and raising awareness of global issues. It is focused on creating trust and peace by socially engaging youth while maintaining awareness of core values. AYUDH is separated into three main categories; Serve, Change, and Nurture Nature. Serve is focused on feeding the homeless, Change is focused on raising money for educational empowerment efforts across the world, and Nurture Nature is focused on sustaining and improving our environment. The AYUDH LA chapter welcomes you to join us in doing activities such as tree plantings, beach cleanups, a blood drive, a retreat, and a bake sale to support these three main efforts!
Garden
In March we developed a beautiful garden in collaboration with Green Friends. The garden is located in the parking lot of MA Center LA and has many fruit trees and vegetable plants. In May we also had a eventful, fun-filled retreat with Br. Dayamrita Chaitanya with a planting class, beach cleanup, and more. Anyone between the ages of 15-30 is welcome to join us for many more fun activities coming up in the future!
Tutoring
Recently, on August 13th, AYUDH hosted a backpack/school supply giveaway at the Harbor City Job Center. This event was the kickstart of our tutoring program for the kids of day laborers in the Harbor City area. The event went really well and everyone had a blast.
About 30 kids and 8 tutors showed up to the open house! We started out by having the kids sign-up so that we could gather basic information such as their name, age, grade, etc.. Next, we had all the kids and tutors play a few games together. These games were really fun and helped the tutors interact with the kids. After playing many games, we gave away backpacks, school supplies, and toys to the kids.
Each backpack contained many necessary school supplies such as pencils, pens, erasers, notebooks, folders, colored pencils, crayons, highlighters, index cards, and more! Thanks to Burrito project support in collecting the backpacks and school supplies. The kids were all really happy and excited to receive these items. We talked to the kids and parents about what AYUDH is, and how we can help the kids succeed in school. As for now, we will tutor the kids from 9AM-11AM every Saturday morning starting on September 10th. Hopefully these tutoring sessions will continue until the end of the school year.
All of the parents were extremely excited about this program. Many of them aren't able to help their children with school homework, but we can. By having a program like this we can help these kids succeed in school and motivate them to continue their education. Tutoring will help support the kids with their academics and encourage them to stay in school and graduate. AYUDH LA will put forth all efforts to assist these kids and teach them the value of a quality education.
