ABOUT LORD AYYAPPA
Sabarimala (Mount Sabari) is the most significant temple in Kerala. Lord Ayyappa, a symbol of religious unity and communal harmony, is the presiding deity of Sabarimala temple. He represents Vishnu and Shiva in one Divinity and is worshipped both as Protector and Deliverer.
Pilgrimage to this temple symbolizes the journey to heaven. Each Ayyappa devotee must climb the eighteen sacred steps leading to the Sanctum Sanctorum. The first five steps symbolize the five human senses (Panchendriyas): sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. These signify the 'mortal' nature of one’s body. The next eight steps symbolize the eight Ashtaragas: love, anger, avarice, lust, pride, unhealthy competition, jealousy and boastfulness. The next three steps stand for the three Gunas or Thrigunas (nature-born qualities): Satva, (perspicuity, discernment), Rajas (activity, enjoyment) and Tamas (inactivity, stupor). The last two steps represent Vidya (Knowledge) and Avidya (Ignorance).
