Sep 3: Summer Turns to Fall on the Farm
Summer Turns to Fall on the Farm
Despite the lack of rain this summer, our garden is alive and abundant with vibrant summer colours. This past long weekend, we harvested green beans, tomatoes, cabbage, eggplants, kale and Malabar spinach. With Fall just around the corner, the Farm Team unearthed some of the root vegetables, mainly potatoes and beets. In the coming weeks, we are expecting leeks, onions, butternut squash and pears. We’re very excited about the upcoming apple season, since we also use them to make delicious apple juice! This year, due to scarce rain, the apples will likely not be ready to pick until early October. Apple juicing will likely happen in mid-October.
At this time of the year, our thoughts naturally turn to preserving the harvest! With the abundance of veggies, we can soon begin freezing, dehydrating, and canning. Are you interested in drying apple chips, freezing kale, or canning applesauce or apple butter? We want to hear from you! Contact Pauline or email ammatoronto@ammagroups.org
An important aspect of our weekly work at the Farm is to maintain order and cleanliness. This creates a more pleasant and peaceful atmosphere. In the garden, we clear out the weeds. Around the property, we clear out invasive bushes and hedges. This past weekend, we’ve also focused on cleaning and organizing many of the sheds and storage spaces. We thank Amma every day for the blessing of working on the grounds, and providing food to the community. Every team member puts in their best effort with a smile and a happy heart. Although there is always something to be done at the Farm, everyone is so grateful and happy to lend a helping hand, knowing that our efforts make a small difference, supporting those in need. This beautiful feeling cannot be accurately described in words. It must be experienced. If you’d like to spend some time in a positive and uplifting environment, be nourished by the sun and connect with nature while doing meaningful, selfless work, we invite you to join us on Saturdays.
